In actuality, the machines were built by Rusty to prevent Rosie from harnessing the power of a fusion distillery in order to create more of the addictive substance known as moon juice in order to control the remaining humans. Dorothy goes to destroy these machines, only to discover that Rosie had lied to her. Rosie claims that mysterious machines are triggering earthquakes. The humans are led by Rosie, who instead of becoming addicted to moon juice took to lifting weights at a young age and who is much smarter than the other humans, called shiners. While searching the mines for Rusty while also hearing rumors of him turning into a monstrous machine, Dorothy comes across a group of devolved humans, addicted to the drug moon juice. Along the way, she comes across Fen, a remnant of the Vectron that Rusty had previously fought, who joins Dorothy as a navigator. Following Rusty’s disappearance at the end of SteamWorld Dig, Dorothy, a robot who he had befriended, travels to the mining town of El Machino in order to search for him. The story takes place in between the events of SteamWorld Dig and SteamWorld Heist. That’s not to say there aren’t tense times, of course. Thanks to that lifeline, I probably only died around a dozen times across ten or so hours of play. More blueprints for upgrades become available to the player by either increasing their level by killing enemies or completing quests, or by finding artifacts hidden in the mines.

Each of the weapons have perks that can be activated by installing Upgrade Cogs found in secret areas. Any resources found can be traded in for cash in the game’s hub world, where the player can upgrade their health, weapons, and abilities. Epic ChefĪs the game progresses, Dorothy can gain abilities and weapons such as pressure bombs, a hookshot, and a pneumatic arm that can punch through rock. Gameplay largely involves exploring a vast underground mine, coming up against enemy creatures while finding various resources as the player digs their way downwards. Carrying on from its predecessor, SteamWorld Dig, SteamWorld Dig 2 puts players in control of Dorothy, a steam-driven robot searching for Rusty, the protagonist of the previous game who disappeared. The game also features customisable gear, and in the Switch version, HD Rumble support. The game is a lot longer than SteamWorld Dig, with multiple bosses rather than just one. GameplayĪs previously mentioned, this game marks the return of the Metroidvania/Spelunky/Dig Dug-style gameplay that was in the original, which consists of exploring mines and finding ores and gems to sell. The fast-travel system also makes your health less important than it might be, as getting to a pneumatic tube entrance lets you hop back to town, instantly replenishing your health, water stores, and lamp. It gets easier as you progress, however, as you can equip cogs to help keep your lamp glowing and unlock more ways to safely take out enemies. The longer you stay underground the dimmer your lamp gets, and the more you collect the greater the loss if you die. Like the last game it has a risk-reward dynamic at play, as you need to come back to the surface to sell off your loot regularly – your backpack can only carry so much – but how often you do that is about how far you want to push it. Dig 2 manages to not only be an exceptional successor, but a great adventure in its own right.Dig 2 is all about the explore, harvest, upgrade, explore loop. And with post-game content that unlocks after you unearth every secret, the desire to keep digging intensifies.
In your quest to acquire every upgrade and explore every nook and cranny, there's no shortage of hidden collectables to discover. There's an overwhelming sense of momentum that runs through the adventure as if developer Image & Form sifted the original in a pan, removing its redundancies while expanding upon what made it so fun to persistently play.
